Heidi Heitkamp is a CNBC contributor, trustee of the McCain Institute, and visiting fellow of Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics. North Dakota’s first female senator, serving from 2013 to 2019, Heitkamp was previously the state’s attorney general and tax commissioner and is a former director of the Dakota Gasification synfuels plant. Throughout her time in public service, she has stood up for Native American children and working families and pushed for affordable health care and an all-of-the-above energy strategy. In the Senate, Heitkamp sat on the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
